David Jensen, a professor of civil engineering, has built a machine that manufactures structures 12 times stronger and much cheaper than their normal steel counterparts.
Some examples of what these so called Isotruss structures will be used for are: Freeway signs, Utility poles, bike frames, backpacking frames, Sports equipment, Satellites, Offshore oil structures, Monuments to the latest dictator, basically anywhere and everywhere you would use some type of pole.
"What we have done is taken the best of both worlds," explains Tracy Livingston, chief technology officer at IsoTruss "We have the material efficiencies of a lattice structure, for less material cost, and we have combined that with automated manufacturing, so we get the labor efficiencies, as well."

So will a bike made out of this stuff have less mass than say a bike made out of Carbon Fiber?
I think you can use many different materials (including carbon fiber) when making the trusses for the bike.
The company identified in this blog lost their license to the IsoTruss technology. The new licensee is a company called Advanced Composite Solutions, LLC. I don't think their web site is up yet, but watch for an announcement soon.
